Getting your children back is possible. It takes consistency, honesty, and hard work โ€” but it is absolutely worth it.

Step 1

Understand what CPS is looking for

CPS's goal is child safety. They want to see you are stable, sober, housed, and able to meet your child's needs. Everything you do should demonstrate this.

Step 2

Get a family law attorney immediately โ€” for free if needed

You have the right to an attorney in dependency court proceedings. If you can't afford one, request a court-appointed attorney.

Step 3

Complete every court-ordered requirement immediately

Parenting classes, substance abuse treatment, drug testing, counseling โ€” complete these as fast as possible. Document everything.

Step 4

Get and stay sober โ€” take all required drug tests

Sobriety is the #1 factor in reunification. Enroll in a program if you haven't already. Never miss a required drug test.

Step 5

Secure stable housing

CPS will not return children to a home that is unsafe or unstable. Work on housing alongside your reunification plan.

Step 6

Attend ALL visitations scheduled with your children

Never miss a visitation. Consistency proves commitment. Bring documentation of your progress to every visit.

Step 7

Stay in communication with your caseworker

Respond promptly to all calls and messages. Be honest, cooperative, and proactive. Send updates showing your progress.

Step 8

Request family reunification services through your caseworker

Many counties have formal family reunification programs with additional support services. Ask your caseworker to connect you.

Step 9

Celebrate reunification and maintain all services

Reunification is just the beginning. Continue therapy, recovery support, and parenting programs to keep your family together.
