Assess your skills, interests, and work history
Make a list of everything you've done โ jobs, volunteering, caregiving, skills learned in recovery. This becomes your foundation.
Get a government-issued ID and Social Security card
You cannot work legally without these. Visit your local DMV for an ID and SSA.gov to replace your Social Security card.
Create or update your resume
Even if you have gaps, a simple honest resume is better than none. Use free resume builders to create a clean, professional document.
Set up a professional email address
Create a simple email like firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Avoid nicknames. Employers will use this to contact you.
Visit your local American Job Center (free help)
American Job Centers offer free resume help, job coaching, interview prep, and access to computers. Walk-ins welcome.
Apply for jobs โ start with re-entry friendly employers
Many employers specifically hire people with criminal backgrounds. Don't be afraid to apply. Be honest and confident.
Prepare for your interview
Practice common questions. Dress clean and neat. Arrive early. Have a brief, honest answer ready if asked about your background.
Ask about the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)
Employers get a tax credit for hiring people with barriers โ this actually makes you MORE attractive to hire. Mention it.
Follow up after applying and interviewing
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview. Following up shows professionalism and sets you apart.
Keep going โ rejection is part of the process
Apply to many jobs. Every 'no' is closer to a 'yes.' Persistence is the most important job skill of all.
